There’s nothing better than a cold pint, and it tastes even sweeter when you don’t have to pay for it. Luckily for us, singer Paul Heaton is offering punters free drinks on Monday as he’s put money behind bars at various boozers across the UK.

To mark his 60th birthday on Monday, May 9, the former Beautiful South star has confirmed he’ll be paying the bill at 60 pubs around the country that hold a special place in his heart. What’s more is three of them are in Wales.

Heaton had planned to party by staging a bicycle tour and performing at 60 pubs across the country, but the plans had to change due to the fact that the pandemic led to recording delays. To try and make up for it the singer has decided to put cash behind the bar at pubs including The Bulls Head, in Merthyr Tydfil, The Golden Fleece Inn in Porthmadog and Rummer Tavern in Cardiff.

Heaton made the announcement on his Twitter page, where has around 110,000 followers, and said he wanted to pay thanks to those who had supported him throughout his career. Even though he didn’t confirm how much he had put behind the bar at some of his favourite boozers, he did encourage the locals to drink “until the bar runs dry”.

Heaton, who was also frontman for the Housemartins, wrote the following message on Twitter: “To celebrate my 60th birthday (on Monday, May 9) I’d originally intended to do another bicycle tour, visiting & performing at 60 pubs across the UK and Ireland. However, due to recording delays caused by the pandemic, I’ve had to shelve these plans for the time being.

“Instead, I’ve decided the next best way to celebrate this coming of age is to handpick 60 pub across the UK and Ireland and put a given amount of money behind the bar of each one. Then, both regulars and yourselves can enjoy a birthday drink on me (until the money runs out, or the bar runs dry!).

“The hope is to bring people together on the day, whilst recognising that many folk who bought my records or showed me support over the years, could do with a wee party, as we come out of Covid and hit potential financial struggles. So, if there’s one near you please head over on Monday, show your support and raise a toast to me on my birthday !”
